 Feast Art Center 

Feast Art Center South Sound Green Tour 2018
Once an abandoned side lot with buckled pavement making it unusable, Pierce Conservation District removed 4,500SF of pavement and installed a grass area for community activities. A rain garden was installed which treats half of the center’s roof water.  Partnering with Feast and the City of Tacoma, with funding from The Nature Conservancy and Boeing, this project now naturally treats 110,000 gallons of runoff annually.

Environmental Learning Center at SAMI

The Environmental Learning Center was completed in October 2017 and is in the process of becoming a LEED certified building. With the unique location in Point Defiance Park, the building was designed to support a greater understanding and appreciation of nature's ecological systems and our relationship to them.  There will be special animal guests from the Point Defiance Zoo making this is a great stop for families with children!

The Bowman House and South Sound Solar      

Working with South Sound Solar, the Bowman Family installed solar panels to save money on their electric bill while reducing their environmental impact. In addition, the family grows their own produce, keeps mason bees and has a flock of chickens!

 Alma Mater - Arts and Community Space and ATMO Architecture

Alma Mater at the Carpenters Building is an artist-driven work, performance, and gathering space. The facilities includes includes a cafe and lounge, an art gallery, music venue, and artist work/education spaces. Sustainable features at this site include a rain garden, solar panels, water conservation and energy efficiency. ATMO Architecture will be on site to answer questions and talk about sustainable building design and how these features can be affordable and accessible to all.

 City of Tacoma Nursery

Come visit the City of Tacoma’s 2.6 acre plant nursery that supports local Urban Forestry and Open Space programs.  Learn how the City is growing its own plants to increase Tacoma’s tree canopy and restore our fragile natural areas.  The plant nursery is a great example of how a landfill can be repurposed into a green space that keeps giving back to the community.
