City of Tacoma Nursery

Background:

In 2010 the City of Tacoma set a goal of 30% canopy cover by the year 2030.  In support of this goal, the Environmental Services Department is leading by example by planting trees in areas of need throughout Tacoma.  In 2013 the Open Space program joined the Environmental Services Department and brought with it many natural areas that are being actively restored.  All of these green infrastructure programs require significant amounts of plant materials to support them.

The Bowman Family showcases energy efficiency with a solar array on the roof (installed by South Sound Solar) and a ductless heat system. In addition, the family grows their own food and raises chickens which provide fresh eggs and fertilizer for the garden. The Bowman Family wants to share with the community their journey to live a more healthy sustainable life and that this journey is not as difficult or overwhelming as people believe it is. This doesn't happen all at once, it is a journey of joy and self-discovery.

Second Cycle

 Second Cycle supports, educates, and advocates for cyclists, new and   experienced, in the Hilltop and surrounding Tacoma community. Second   Cycle provides community work space, bicycle maintenance classes,   literature, youth bike programming, and repair service, as well as new and used bicycle components. Bicycles are one of the most environmentally forms of transportation available. Second Cycle further reduces environmental impacts by selling used bicycle parts and used bicycles which keeps materials out of the landfill.
