Swantown Inn

1431 11th Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98501
Tour on May 19

The Swantown Inn & Spa, an Olympia Bed and Breakfast, is an 1887 Victorian Mansion listed on both the city and state historical registers. To strengthen their business and keep the historic value of the property relevant today, owners Nathan and Casey Allan decided to add a new event space where the Inn can host weddings, meetings and other functions of 60 people or more.

The Allan's environmental and community ethics are obvious when you meet them, and shine through in the way they built the new space with many energy efficient features.  These include:

  • Daikin ductless heat pump delivering comfort, heating and cooling, by local contractor G&G Heating
  • "Ducted" flush mount outlets minimize impact on the homes historic character
  • Individual temperature controls by room saves energy during low-occupancy
  • Earthwise LowE windows designed to reduce air infiltration and solar gain
  • Insulated Concrete Form foundation
  • Careful air sealing of penetrations during construction
  • Above-code ceiling insulation
  • 100% LED lighting
  • Restoration of historic wood windows in the original building
  • Two Electric Vehicle charging stations (Tesla and Universal)

The Allans are avid gardeners and beekeepers who see themselves as the stewards of an historic treasure of Olympia's heritage.  Several times in its history, the Inn was threatened with destruction.  By updating and expanding the business, they have ensured this 130 year-old home will be preserved for another 100 years, exemplifying the green preservation motto "the greenest home is one you don't have to build because it's already there!"
